When people hear the word headshot, they often picture something stiff: a corporate-looking photo taken against a plain background, usually with a forced smile and a suit jacket.
But headshots have evolved. In today’s world, a professional headshot doesn’t have to feel formal or outdated. In fact, I define a headshot differently than most traditional photographers.
Here’s what a headshot really is — and what it definitely isn’t.
What a Headshot Is
In my book, a headshot is any photo where the viewer can easily recognize you and see your face. It’s designed for connection and recognition — whether that’s on LinkedIn, your business website, or a podcast guest bio.
A professional headshot can look like:
- Face-forward or slightly turned — you don’t always need to stare down the camera.
- Upper body or even full body — as long as your face is clearly visible.
- Neutral or environmental backgrounds — your office, a studio, or an outdoor space can all work.
- Props, used sparingly — maybe your laptop, notebook, or even a coffee mug, if it helps define your brand.
Bottom line: a modern headshot should look like you, feel like you, and make people instantly recognize you when they meet you in real life.

What a Headshot Isn’t
This is where people often get confused. A business headshot is not the same as a full brand photography session.
It’s not:
- A brand photo session with multiple outfits, props, and storylines.
- A lifestyle photography shoot that shows your process, client work, or behind-the-scenes vibe.
- A full content library of images you can use on social media for months.
Think of a headshot as the polished single photo that represents you — while brand photography tells the bigger story of your business.
Here’s an example of some photos from a larger strategic brand session.
Why Professional Headshots Still Matter
It’s often the first impression: the image people see on LinkedIn, Zoom, podcast covers, speaking engagements, or in your press kit.
🤝🏽 A headshot is like your handshake.
🗣️ A brand photo session is the full conversation.
Both matter — but they serve different purposes.
So What Do You Need?
- A headshot is perfect if you just need a clean, recognizable photo for your LinkedIn profile, company website, or conference speaking bio.
- A brand photo session is the right choice if you’re a business owner, creative, or coach who needs to show more than your face — you want to tell your story, connect with your audience, and create a whole library of content.
