Why I Almost Canceled My Own Brand Shoot

Why I Almost Canceled My Own Brand Shoot
(And Why I’m Glad I Didn’t)

I’m a brand photographer. I help other creatives show up with confidence, clarity, and strategy.

A couple months ago, I found myself standing in front of another photographer’s camera for my own brand shoot, at a session I’d booked weeks earlier.

And I almost didn’t go through with it.

A few weeks before my brand shoot, I’d gotten out of the hospital after a rough virus and a round of high-dose steroids. I was exhausted, bloated, and felt like I had gained weight practically overnight. The carefully planned outfits I’d chosen no longer fit the same. I didn’t feel like myself.

And I seriously considered canceling my brand photoshoot.

What Made Me Show Up Anyway

I had every reason to postpone—physically, emotionally, even logistically. But something inside me whispered…

This is the moment you need to show up.

Because here’s the truth: authentic brand photography isn’t about looking perfect—it’s about being real.

So, I showed up.

And the images we created? They were a reflection of resilience. Of vulnerability. Of a woman showing up in the middle of a hard season—and choosing to be seen anyway.

The Myth of the “Perfect” Time for Brand Photos

If you’re waiting for the “perfect” time to invest in brand photography—when your skin is glowing, your schedule is clear, and your confidence is sky-high—I’m gonna let you in on a secret: that moment will probably never come.

But that doesn’t mean you’re not ready.

In fact, the times when you feel the most unsure might be when you’re building the kind of trust and connection your brand truly needs.

And your audience? They can feel that honesty. It’s magnetic.

5 Mindset Tips to Feel More Confident Before Your Brand Shoot

If you’re facing your own version of “I don’t feel ready,” here are 5 mindset tips that help me and my clients all the time.

1. Perfection is a myth

Your quirks, your smile lines, your realness—and yes, the weigh you put on over the last few months—they’re part of your brand story. Don’t edit them out before you even begin.

2. Speak kindly to yourself

Would you criticize a friend for not being “perfect”? Nope. So extend that same compassion inward.

3. Visualize confidence

Before the shoot, take a breath, close your eyes, and imagine yourself feeling grounded and radiant. Visualization is incredibly powerful.

4. Let your photographer be your guide

You’re not in this alone. A good brand photographer (👋 hi) will help you feel comfortable, supported, and seen.

5. Remember: nerves are normal

Feeling self-conscious? Welcome to the club. It doesn’t mean you’re not ready—it means you’re human.

You’re More Ready Than You Think

This shoot became a powerful reminder that I don’t need to wait for the “ideal version” of myself to show up.

And neither do you.

So whether you’re navigating a rough patch, feeling off, or just doubting whether this is the right time, you are worth being seen right now.

If you’re ready—or even brand shoot curious—I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Let’s create something real. Something powerful. Something unmistakably you.
