Do you struggle to feel comfortable in brand photos? If so, you’re not alone. Many women business owners feel confident in their work, but uncomfortable being the face of their brand — which, of course, means getting in front of a camera.
When photos and video are tied to your visibility and your credibility, it’s normal for the experience of getting brand photos to feel like a high-stakes investment.
But feeling comfortable in brand photos isn’t about being naturally photogenic or confident. It’s mostly the result of preparation, clear communication, and working with a photographer who knows how to guide you through the process. When these elements are part of your experience, brand photography becomes less about trying to look perfect and more about showing up in a way that feels aligned and authentic.
The good news is that there are practical, realistic things you can do before your session to feel more at ease. These 9 simple tips can help you walk into your brand shoot feeling grounded, supported, and ready to be seen.
1. Choose a photographer who communicates (and prepares you for your session)
One of the biggest factors in feeling comfortable during a brand shoot has nothing to do with how you look or what you wear…it has to do with how the experience is structured.
I once had a client tell me she booked a brand session with another photographer and didn’t hear anything for weeks after signing the contract. A few days before the shoot, she received a short email with the address and time. No planning, no conversation about her brand. No discussion about how the images would be used, or guidance on what to expect.
By the time she showed up on shoot, she felt anxious and unsure if she was prepared.
Brand photography works best when there’s lots of communication before the shoot day even happens. When you understand the vision, the purpose, and the plan, you don’t walk into the session hoping for good results. You walk in knowing what you’re creating with your photographer.
Even if you’re not doing a full strategic brand session, working with an actual brand photographer who provides direction, resources, and support beforehand can dramatically change how you feel in front of the camera.
2. Don’t try to act or appear confident
Brand photos work best when you show up as yourself. Your audience isn’t looking for perfection, they’re looking for connection.
When you’re trying to “act like your best, most successful self,” photos can look stiff and awkward. But if you relax and have fun — with a photographer that you already trust — your body language will naturally soften and your expression will be much more genuine.
3. Get clear on how you’ll be using your photos
When you’re packing for your brand session, and you just begin to realize that you don’t know how your brand photos will be used once you get them, you’ve already created a situation that’s going to produce anxiety…before your brand session even starts.
Understand the purpose behind your photos and video: are they for your website? Social media? A new offer launch? Speaking opportunities?
When you and your photographer understand the purpose behind your visuals, you can walk into your shoot with loads of confidence and intention.
4. Plan a look that feels like an elevated version of your real self

Comfort in photos is deeply connected to how you feel in your clothing. I would add that when it comes to your brand session, hair and makeup is part of that.
If your look feels like a costume, or something you’d never wear in real life, you’re going to feel disconnected from the experience (and ultimately, your clients won’t connect with you). Instead, aim for a pulled together version of your everyday style. You should still recognize yourself, but with a little more polish.
I always recommend my favorite Chicago personal stylist, Lora from Shopping Girl xoxo. She’s amazing and fun, and so many of my clients use her for planning their brand session wardrobes with clothes they’ll wear well beyond shoot day.
5. Practice being visible in low-stakes ways
If you rarely see yourself on camera, a brand shoot can feel intense.
Taking simple steps, like recording Instagram Stories, getting on video calls with your camera on, or taking casual selfies, can help you feel more familiar with being seen online. This gradual exposure makes professional photography feel less overwhelming.
Looking at yourself in the mirror doesn’t always feel the same as seeing photos of yourself (see my blog post about this!). So practicing in from of a camera can go a long way to helping you feel more comfortable.
6. Work with a photographer who gives clear direction during the shoot
Many women who don’t like photos of themselves assume they’re “bad in photos,” when the real issue is usually a lack of guidance.
A strong brand photographer doesn’t just document how you look. They help you understand how to move, where to focus your energy, and how to communicate visually. A really good photographer also knows how to photograph you and your angles to make you look your best.
7. Create a calm transition into your shoot day
Brand shoots can feel vulnerable, especially when you’re used to being the one behind the scenes in your business. Giving yourself time to arrive, settle in, and mentally shift into being visible helps reduce unnecessary pressure.
That’s why I almost always suggest on-site hair and makeup. Instead of rushing or feeling flustered, you can take a moment to breathe, listen to music, sip a coffee, and step into the experience feeling supported and ready.
I always send a few of my favorite recommended hair and makeup artists that travel on-site to all of my clients, so they can choose their own artists that will feel like a good fit for them.
8. Shift your focus from how you look to how you relate
Women have been conditioned to believe their appearance is the most important thing about how they show up, and brand photography can bring that pressure to the surface.
While preparing for your session is important, the real power of your images comes from the sense of connection they create. Clients choose to work with you because of your expertise, your perspective, and how you make them feel, not because of how you look.
When you anchor your intention that your goal is to connect with the people you’re meant to serve — not to look flawless — much of the pressure to appear perfect begins to fall away.
9. Remember that confidence is a process, not a prerequisite
Women often feel like they need to feel confident before they step in front of a camera.
In reality, confidence develops as the session unfolds.
I see this every single time: as my brand client starts to move in the beginning of the session and I give guidance and feedback, she starts to feel what’s working and her comfort naturally grows.
The bonus? She always ends the day telling me how much fun she had!
