5 Things to Do Before Your Brand Photoshoot for Better Results

How to prepare for a brand photoshoot

Look, when it comes to your brand photoshoot, I love a good outfit plan.

But the clients who get the strongest results from their brand photoshoot are not the ones who show up with the most clothes, they do 5 things before their shoot for the best results.

They’re the ones who come in with intention.

Strategic brand photography is not just about making you look good. It’s about helping your audience understand who you are, what you do, why it matters, and why they should trust you.

So if you have a brand shoot coming up, or you’re thinking about booking one, here are five things my clients do before their session that make a huge difference in the final images.

1. They know who their dream client is

Before we plan a single photo, we need to know who your brand photos are for.

Yes, you are in the images, but your brand photos are not really about you. They’re about the person landing on your website or scrolling through your Instagram and wondering:

“Is this person for me?”
“Do I trust her?”
“Can she help me?”
“Do I want to take the next step?”

My clients who have a strong sense of who they want to attract, end up making better decisions about everything: the location, their wardrobe, what prop are most important, their energy and expressions…right down to the types of images they need.

A therapist who wants to attract couples and families needs something very different from a business coach launching a group program. A calligrapher creating wedding stationery needs something different from a top podcaster planning a book release.

Your dream client shapes your story.

When we know who we’re speaking to, the photos become so much more than pretty, they become useful.

2. They have a plan for their website

Your website needs different photos than Instagram does.

No, you do not need to have your entire website designed before your brand shoot. In fact, clients get the best usage from their photos when I am working alongside your web designer prior to the shoot.

A homepage Hero image might need negative space for text, or perhaps it needs to be B-roll video. An About page may need images that feel personal and warm. A Services page may need photos that show your process, your personality, or what it feels like to work with you.

This is why I always want to know what you’re using the photos for.

  • Are you redesigning your website?
  • Are you launching a new offer?
  • Are you updating your About page?
  • Are you using images to create sales page visuals?
  • Are you replacing a headshot that needs to be retired?

When we know the website plan, even loosely, we can create images that support the design instead of forcing your web designer to make random photos “work.”

In other words, the goal is not just to have a gallery full of beautiful images, but to have the right images for the places your brand visuals are living.

3. They nail down their main message

Before your shoot, it helps to know the main message your brand needs to communicate.

This does not have to be a perfect tagline or be polished website copy. It just needs to give us direction.

For example, your message might be:

“I help overwhelmed business owners feel calm and supported.”
“I make high-end wedding stationery feel deeply personal.”
“I help women trust themselves in midlife.”
“I create thoughtful, strategic design for brands that are ready to grow.”

Once we know your brand’s main message, we can start translating it visually. It helps us to decide if the photos should feel things like calm, bold, warm, playful, grounded, elevated, or approachable.

Once we’re able to describe who the image should feel…that’s where brand photography starts to get really good. So instead of taking photos that simply say, “Here I am,” we create images that say something more specific, and your dream clients can actually see themselves in your photos.

4. They have a vision for where their business is going next

Your brand photos should not only represent where your business is right now, but where your business is headed in the next few months or 1-2 years.

This is especially important if you’re raising your prices, launching a new offer, stepping into a more expert role, reaching a more aligned audience.

Having a vision of your future keeps you from having new photos that look like a tired, old version of your business.

You might not know exactly what your next offer will look like. You might still be refining your audience. You might be in that slightly messy in-between phase where your business is changing, but your visuals have not caught up yet.

That’s all normal; but having some sense of the direction matters. This way we can create images that bridge the gap between where your business has been and where it’sheaded next.

If your current visuals are still representing the scrappy beginner version of your brand, but you are ready to be seen as more established, more trusted, and more worth the investment, we need to plan for that.

5. They prepare themselves to show up confidently

I want to be very clear about what I mean with this point.

Preparing yourself to show up confidently does not mean you need to feel completely confident before your brand shoot.

In fact, pretty much everyone starts to feel a lot of anxiety in the days and hours leading up to their shoot. They say things like:

“I’m awkward in photos.”
“I don’t know what to do with my hands.”
“I hate being the center of attention.”
“I’m excited, but also mildly spiraling.”

Totally normal.

Preparing to show up confidently means giving yourself the support you need so you are not walking into the session feeling scattered, rushed, or unsure of what we’re trying to create.

That might look like:

  • Trying on your outfits a couple weeks ahead of time (a must do!)
  • Hiring my stylist to help if clothing stresses you out
  • Hiring on-site hair and makeup
  • Beginning to pack a week beforehand
  • Following the Creative Brief I create for your session
  • Getting enough sleep
  • Drinking lots of water for a few days before your shoot.
  • Making sure you eat the morning of the session
  • Reminding yourself that you do not have to perform, and to just trust the process

My job is to direct you, guide you, and make sure the photos feel like you. Yours is to get the support you need so you can enjoy the day — it really is fun!

Chicago brand photography photoshoot tips

What you do not need before your brand shoot

Now, let’s talk about what I did not say…

You do not need to get a whole new wardrobe.
You do not need to lose 15 pounds.
You do not need to have every photo planned out.
You do not need to know exactly how to pose.
You do not need to have a perfectly styled home or office.
You do not need to feel 100% confident.

Yes, wardrobe matters. Yes, location matters. Yes, details matter. But the best brand photos do not come from perfection.

They come from preparation, intention, and a plan that is rooted in your unique business.

The best brand photos start before shoot day

A strong brand photoshoot begins weeks beforehand, when we look at your business, your audience, your message, your offers, your website, and the way you want people to feel when they experience your brand.

That is why my brand photography process is so strategy-heavy.

Because I never want you walking into your brand session with a pile of outfits, a few random props, and a vague hope that we’ll “get some good shots.”

I want you walking in knowing what we’re creating, why it matters, and how those images will support your business long after shoot day.

Because when your photos are planned with intention, they do more than look beautiful…they help your dream clients trust you faster, remember you longer, and feel more confident choosing you.
